Love how the pilots departing first turnback and respectfully bow their heads in recognition of the honour of leaving before their wingmen. So Japanese so respectful, let's hope there's never a day they need to exercise extreme prejudice again. The days of this beautiful big smokey birds are coming to a close. Otsukaresama.

My first experience concerning the F-4... When I was 8 or 9 years old, (1972) I walked out on the flight line at Eglin AFB and stood underneath this awesome machine to admire it. Needless to say the AP's came out to get me and take me back to base housing. That AP Tech Sgt. was all smiles when he picked me up. Been smiling ever since when I see her flying.

I visited the JASDF Hamamatsu Air Base Museum last year and was told that these beautiful birds above will be decommissioned in 2020 and that they, not sure how many, will be transfered to the JASDF Hamamatsu Air Base Museum. And like most other aircraft at the museum, visitors will be able to sit in the cockpit, which I had the pleasure of doing in the F-86D and F model, F-104J Starfighter, Mitsubishi F-1 and the Mitsubishi T-2 flight simulator. There will be a last flight from Hyakuri Air Base, where this video was filmed, to Hamamatsu Air Base and I want to be there when they make that final touchdown :)

The first time I saw the F4 up close was at El Centro where the Blue Angels practice part of the year. At the time, the C-5A Galaxy had just come into service and I got to tour the cockpit and view the huge cavernous flight deck. But what really caught my eyes and ears were the F-4 Phantom IIs. Painted in camouflage, the pilots would accelerate down the runway as far as they could, pull off slightly, gain as much speed as they could down the TODA and then pull hard into vertical. It looked like they were going straight up; they weren',t of course, but it was a spectacular sight and sound to see a pair of them boogie out. And then another pair. And then another pair. And then another pair. Beautiful aircraft in a very rough time.
Your videos are most excellent and represent the cream of the crop. My greatest respect to you and your technique; they're the very best out there. EDIT : btw, if you ever have the chance, pass on my respects to the squadron(s) paint crews. Their liveries are quite excellent and dynamic. Beautiful.

The Reno Nevada "High Rollers" flew RF-4s back in the 80s. The motto on the base gate was, "Don't trust anyone over 300 feet."
I was at a party and heard some fun stories about flying low from pilots.
Working outdoors, I heard a rumble, looked up and saw a RF-4 being chased by 2 F-4s from Fallon, all about 500 ft up. Fun times for them.

I was assigned to the first USAF unit to receive the F-4 back in 62-63-? The odd part is it replaced the F-84s we had recalled from the Guard. Also, MacDill had gone from MATS to TAC and the Cuban Crisis was in full swing. The AF stuck a J suffix on our AFSCs freezing us to that Wing and I was in the middle of a battle to get reassigned back to Japan. It took months, but I won the battle. The only time in my AF career my low rank was an asset(-:
